I was SHOCKED when I learned what this is. I'm glad I've never eaten it, but I sure don't like the movie Ratatouille anymore!
PETA activists must have a fieldday with this one!

what is fois grass? (sorry so lazy to look for it) and why it is banned?
know it, tried it, and didn't like it. Fois Gras for those of you that don't know is the fatty liver of a duck. They coupe the duck up and force feed it so that it will gain weight quickly. It is considered a delicacy in France and other parts of Europe. I unknowingly tried it in Paris and did not like it even before I knew what it was.
thanks for the info victoriaBCmom. poor ducks!!
They force feed the duck by putting a feeding tube down its throat, expand the liver to 10 times its normal size, all for what? That is so cruel.

OMG i don't know what to say! =0 that's so cruel!
I like fois gras but I rarely eat it. Though I'm not sure what the big deal is about it. So what if they force feed the ducks to speed up the process? Would you think less of it if they fed it slowly then killed it like the farm animals you eat?
What about balut, ruthmagdato? Have you tried it? Do you like it? I could never understand how my parents and other relatives could eat it but they like it. By the way, balut is a partially developed duck egg that is a delicacy in the Philippines.
Peta has field days with just about anything related to animal cruelty. Do you eat at KFC, where they cram birds into huge waste-filled factories, breed and drug them to grow so large that they can’t even walk, and often break their wings and legs. At slaughter, the birds’ throats are slit and they are dropped into tanks of scalding-hot water—often while they are still conscious. How many chickens do you think they serve in the US versus fois gras in France/Europe?
I'll get off my soap box now but I'll say just one more thing. Your concern is valid, cruelty to animals is sad and shocking when you find out... but unless you are vegan then it's really no different than the meat you eat, it's just a process.
I haven't eaten balut! I have eaten other street foods but balut is not my thing ... I can't stomach just seeing people pour on vinegar to halfed cracked balut shell. They say it's good aphrodisiac that's why many loves eating it but No way!!! it's just not for me! I like KFC's chicken though.
Oh yeah so true, cruelty to animals is really soo shocking!! PetiteMaman i got your point. I don't disagree. Well, it's the process the made me feel bad for those ducks. I imagined the pain that those poor ducks went through. I am not vegetarian and yes I understand that is a process ... but what's so wrong about saying that was cruel? "They force feed the duck by putting a feeding tube down its throat" that totally saddened me, a totally whole new thing to me ... I haven't heard of it! So when I learned it here I couldn'help but say that was "cruel"! I am not overreacting or what, that was really my initial reaction.
Balut an aphrodisiac? I didn't realize that!
I'm sorry if my response came out personal, that wasn't my intent. I totally agree that it is cruel, and there's nothing wrong with your initial reaction. I just wanted to mention another cruelty to animal point by using balut as an example because I'm Filipino, you're Filpino and it just made me think about balut and how that process is cruel too. By no means was I trying to override your reaction.
