We're heading into the lice season!!!
I just posted some tips on the thread to remove head lice...just thought I would share some prevention tips I've experienced as a mom and a classroom teacher.
ALWAYS blow dry hair after washing or even damp hair after outdoor winter play. ~ lice prefer warm damp environments.
Put a little tea tree oil on your child’s hair before they head (no pun intended) off to school. Rub some tea tree oil on your hands and then onto their hair.
Keep fashion aside if necessary and put long hair into pony tails every school day.
Toss coats hats scarves etc. into the dryer regularly for 45 mins. We did this every day after school.
Inform you children of the risks...no hat or clothing sharing, no brush or comb sharing and avoid sitting on couches or upholstered furniture at school and NEVER lie down on carpets.
Moms remember...if you volunteer in the classroom, you too can get head lice....so be mindful of the tips as well.
Although these tips are not guaranteed they always helped me.
Do you have preventative tips to share?
This is going to sound crazy but it worked for my girls...
When my girls were in elementary school several years ago there were repeated epidemics of head lice at school and at their daycare. I would immediately treat the kids, the house, the toys, the car, anything that could be steamed or dusted with chemicals or bleached or torched in the dryer, was. One year, the girls got them FOUR times in one fall/winter season. I took them to the doctor who told me that the lice shampoos could not be used any more. He said that the chemicals in them are accumulative and that I could do serious harm to them if I continued with those treatments.
Then I realized, everyone was getting this affliction, even other parents but I never did, not once. The difference, I color my hair. Although it pained me greatly to do so, I colored my girls' hair. I matched their natural color as closely as I could. Every fall school season thereafter, I colored their hair again.
I have no data to back up this treatment method other than personal experience. All I can tell you is that it worked for me. They have never once had head lice since and they are now 18 and 20 and in college. Most importantly, I was no longer risking their health with those shampoos.
I've heard that coloring hair works as well :)
We just dealt with this for the first time two weeks ago. We have a six year old son. We treated him, and then cut his hair really short. He stayed home from school for a few days, I washed bedding every day for a week and vacummed the mattress. Stuffed animals were frozen.
So far so good.. they haven't come back. Even though his friend.. who I look after.. has had more in her hair.
As tough as it is, with a child who is super affectionate, I have to remind her not to get into head-to-head contact as much as possible. It's difficult, because she has a small group of friends that she automatically hugs hello to when they meet.
Remember that lice CRAWL - not hop.
