My 3 yr old son was possibly exposed to chicken pox at his preschool.  The little boy at preschool was at school Thur and then on Fri broke out wiht chicken pox.  What's the chances of my son  getting chicken pox?  Since I've haven't delt with chicken pox before can someone give me the 101 on chicken pox, what to look for etc.

Thanks!

Chicken Pox guide! health.kaboose.com/kids-health/chicken-pox.html

Here's another one from kids health: www.kidshealth.org/parent/infections/skin/chicken_pox.html

All I can say is if your child get's the chicken pox, have chalomine(sp?) lotion on hand and be careful if you or any adults around him haven't had chicken pox before. It's more dangerous to adults than to children.

Good Luck!

Wasn't your son vaccinated? Our kids are here in Calgary. Although my 16 year old had it when he was 4. No vaccinations back then. It was ugly. He had pox inside the eye linings. They were everywhere and lucky him, he had a fever to go along with it. Tylenol and collodial oatmeal baths and of course calamine lotion were godsends.

With my 2 eldest kids who had them it started on their tummies and came with a fever.  So my only advise is keep the tylenol and calomine lotion handy.  Aveeno has an oatmeal bath that you get in little packets and that helped a lot too!

I am new to this sight, but thought I would post.  My three children have been vaccinated.  Even though they were vaccinated my 2 year old daughter still got the chicken pox.  There were only about twelve raised bumps, almost like blisters.  Most on her stomach and arms.  We used the oatmeal baths.  They also only lasted about 7 - 9 days.  So even though the vaccination is required before they start school where I live, they still can have a mild case.  I think they show up within 10-14 days after being exposed.  Hope this helps.

If your son has been vaccinated against chicken pox (which is highly possible since many state regulations require that vax for kids in preschool/daycare) his chances are slim.  BUT there is still the chance he'll get a mild case.  My best friend's daughter ended up with it last year, and she was out for 3 days (as opposed to 7+ days typically).  Look for the sores on his body, it usually starts on the trunk.

The preschool I worked at in Colorado had an outbreak a couple years ago, and out of 100 kids (90 were vaxed, the other 10 were infants) 6 came down with mild cases.  I was pregnant at the time of the outbreak and freaked out because I thought I'd get it a second time!

My oldest daughter had chichen pox at 10 months old. She lived in the tub for 2 weeks. Oatmeal baths were the only way to keep her calm. That and a lot of cuddling.

Thanks for info.  He has been vaccinated but I know there is always the chance because the other boy was also vaccinated too.

All the info was very helpful.  Thank you!
