writemama My name is Liz Garone, and I live in Northern California. When I'm not playing Mom to my two daughters, I'm writing for The Wall Street Journal and other publications. I love, love, love the water, whether it's swimming or going for walks on the beach looking for seaglass. Happy reading! |

Here's my suggestion for a summer trip: a cruise to Alaska. My husband and I just returned from 10 days with our five-year-old and one-year-old in tow (as well as my mom, my husband's parents, and his grandmother). We celebrated Zoe's first bday on Read more...

Only seven months since my last post. Wow. I am now a mother of two. So, what do I crave? SLEEP. I think my all-time, least favorite question would have to be: Is she sleeping through the night yet? Does waking up every two to three hours count? My Read more...

At least in the Bay Area, it feels like spring is finally here. My daughter and I took a celebratory drive to the nursery the other day and picked out a handful of packages of seeds (sweet peas, poppies, broccoli...) and a couple of broccoli starter Read more...

When I was checking my e-mail the other day, I noticed that The Police were returning to the Bay Area for a final visit. (My husband and I saw them together last year when they were here, and separately when we were in our teens many years ago, so Read more...
LOL! Oh what fun that would have been, but at least you saw them last year. There is always next year for another reunion tour.

Now that I am finally starting to look and feel pregnant five months into this thing, my mind has begun to focus on the inevitable question: VBAC or C-section? Boy, I never realized what a loaded question this is in the Bay Area! When I say that I Read more...
My oldest was born at UC San Fran - he was over 2 weeks late! What does that say about SF? I was finally induced. Was the longest two weeks of my life. Go with what works for you. What does it really matter in the end?
I think that whatever works best for you is what is best. Period. Listen to your doctor's, do your own research and pay attention to your heart (gut instinct!) and then do what works best. No layperson or outsider can tell you what is the best plan of action for you. Best of luck and congrats on the new baby! :)

I'm always looking for easy ways to go green and love the idea of passing good earth habits on to my daughter. So, when I saw my mom's solar flashlight, I thought it was a great idea. SunNight Solar’s BOGO Light comes with its own solar panels Read more...
Very nice! I love the pink option! I've flagged your blog so I can come back to this when I need a gift idea!
What a great gift idea. Thanks. Another environmentally friendly flashlight that my family likes is called the Wind 'n Go (they are small, use a crank, and require no batteries -- we loves them.) Can you ever have too many flashlights?
That is very cool. We have the shakable flashlights (the way we figure it, it's a way to keep warm when the lights/heat goes out).

So, now that we have finally picked a venue for my daughter's four-year-old b-day party, the more difficult question comes up: Who do we invite? There is a limit to the number of kids at the place where we are going, and my daughter tends to be Read more...
I'm with you all the way on this one. I think your answer lies in what you said about your daughter - she does better in small groups. So that's what you do. Any mom who has lived through a bday where the bday star is falling apart will agree! I have been in similar positon and only invited a handful of kids from class. You could also have a couple of the other kids you did not invite over for lunch after school one day - to decorate cookies or something. Less is more!

While my husband is musically inclined (he dabbles in guitar and piano), I tend to find my creative outlets elsewhere: drawing, painting, making collages. It wasn't always this way. In fifth grade, I excitedly joined the band, and my parents Read more...

I never thought I would be a Wiggles' mom. Our daughter isn't even a big Wiggles fan. But, when the Ticketmaster e-mail arrived in my Inbox and mentioned that the Wiggles were coming to San Jose in a couple of months, I somehow got caught up in the Read more...
Ooo, tough choice but front row, might be nice to have her first major concert experience be so posh...
You know what, you'll have fun. I did the same thing and my daughter didn't even know who the wiggles were at the time. Sheesh, front row tickets for a kids concert was all I kept thinking too. My daughter was about the same age as your daughter. She danced, she sang and had more fun than her little friend who WAS a huge wiggles fan.

So, my mom called this morning to tell me that there was a segment on the Today Show about out-of-control birthday parties for kids. Was she hinting? I had just finished booking my soon-to-be four-year-old daughter's party at the Lawrence Hall of Read more...
I don't think $200 is a lot for a birthday party. Last year, my husband and I tried to save money by booking a room in a local church. Even with that low-cost rental the whole party with decor, cake, food and loot bags cost over $300! Yipes. I've decided that the indoor play centre birthday parties always end up being more economical in the end. So, have fun and don't feel guilty! (:
Thanks! I feel better already. :> I have the feeling that I, too, will be over the $300 mark once all the extras are thrown in. Now, the question is what to do for lunch?! Parent and kid finger foods?
Yeah, $200 sounds cheap to me, too. I've definitely been guilty of throwing big parties (we're party people) but I've often shared the cost with my sister-in-law (her son is one month older than mine) and that works well, too. I agree it is well worth it to not have to clean up etc. As they get older too it's harder to entertain the children at your house...

That's a good entry- I also found this info on getting Carnival cruise deals to places like this a great read. Thanks for the good read..You should keep up the entries as things happen, I'm sure you'd have a captive audience!
