Okay, so maybe that wasn't the best title for this blog.  OmegaCon has been great- really fantastic for a first-year convention, and though there were a few bumps on Friday, it's chugging right along.  I don't feel sold out as a fan, as a parent, Read more...

For everyone out there who's tired of angst-ridden vampires who mope about wallowing in their undeath, my dh has written an awesome urban fantasy entitled STAKED.  Here's the SFWA Press release: www.sfwa.org/pressbook/08/0302a-Lewis-Staked.html.  Read more...

My grandma recently gave my little ones each $2 for their piggy banks.  My six year old accepted happily, but my four year old frowned.  "My piggy doesn't eat paper," he said, "my piggy only eats metal monies."  So she swapped Read more...

It is so cute how little kids' minds work. Sounds rational to me!

I'm borrowing a laptop from my four year old.  Need I say more?  (I could borrow one from my six year old, but he just has to feed his Webkinz.)  Sometimes I wonder how our tech-savvy kids will turn out.  They're part of the first generation to Read more...

My laptop is dead.  :(  The power-in port no longer accepts power, and it's not the cable, either.  And for the cost of fixing that on a four year old laptop... it's a better investment to get a new one.   I got online today and did a bunch of Read more...

Oh, me too! My new laptop is supposed to come today, so I am sitting home waiting on UPS. Being able to swap out the batteries in the old one was a lifesaver... I'd never have been able to do my web updates without it!

Well, we finally found out last Thursday what had been plaguing my four year old for most of a month.  He'd run a 102 degree fever, be sick for a couple of days, seem to get well, go back to school, and a couple of days later it'd start all Read more...

Ug, insurance companies. I'm nervous 'cause we just switched plans where we have to pay totally out of pocket until that nasty deductible is reached as well. So far we've yet to see any of the bills. They're like time bombs out there waiting to be dropped on my front porch!

WOW ... you just diagnosed my son! Seriously ... we have been dealing with this for 3 weeks now. He just finished with something that truly resembled the flu (vomitting and diarrhea) and passed it onto the whole family. But he has had the runny nose, nothing else ... high fevers (103.8, could only get it down to 101.5 with medication), followed by good days, then something new would pop up. I thought I was going insane. Luckily, we have this week off from school and we are staying out of the mainstream. I have disinfected my hosue to extremes and he seems to be doing GREAT (2nd day in a row ... I am hoping by Monday, he will have had lots of time to build back up that white cell count). If not ... we will be following your footsteps to the doctor. :)

My kids have finally gotten over it, and so have I, as far as I can tell. (Now if I can just prevent relapses...) Christina, I hope your little one is better as well! Mclairch, you're one up on us; we have to pay before we can even leave the doctor's office... I never appreciated how much insurance helped with the cost of health care until I had to cut that first $200+ check!

Dh has logged onto my blog and has been reminded that I don't want cut flowers... and so I get to pick out an heirloom shrub, tree, or bush again this year.  The question is: what kind should I get?   I've got a flowerbed full of rosebushes Read more...

Sorry, I have no suggestions but am amazed by your collection of flowers. And the fact you ask for plants instead of cut flowers is a great idea ... a great "green" gift. (didn't mean to insert the pun.)

Hmmmm... so many options! Do you have a place for Wisteria there? I just love the scent of that in bloom. One of these days, I hope to have a Wisteria vine... (and a place to put it!)

Wisteria is gorgeous, but has to be pruned regularly or it will take over. My mom called it kudzu with flowers. Forsythia. Get a forsythia.

Whew... the form I needed finally came and I got all our taxes done. I used TaxAct online, which I highly recommend- it's cheap, it's user-friendly, and it has a question and answer format that I can manage even with all our form 1099s. With e-file, it's ten days to rebate time!

Don't know that I have a workable suggestion other than what you're doing. I was always an abnormally above my supposed 'level' reader once I started, so the words came easily to me. My suggestion is to see if you can find something he *wants* to read, and see if you can expand his interests outward. Nothing works, IMHO, as well to increase vocabulary as simply reading.

You know, his reading has really picked up over the last few months- I think he'll be able to manage Encyclopedia Brown soon- but his spelling just isn't keeping pace with his reading. He can read his spelling words just fine, but when he goes to write them, there are extra letters in there that only make sense to him, KWIM?
